Club Red Swing is Closing its Doors....

Josh, Janet & DJ SlamYes. You read the correctly.

Be sure to read this whole page so you'll know exactly what's going on.

Both Josh & I have struggled with the decision for a little bit now. The main reason we've struggled with it is because you are so cool. It's really great to see you at the club Chad the bad and we love how much you enjoy it. That's the thing that makes it really great every week.

We've been doing Club Red Swing every Wednesday night for 2 years now. (I can't belive it!) Before that, we did Orange Tree Resort for 1 year. So, it's 3 years for us working on a project that was "just a favor" to a friend. Let me explain...

The Wednesday night swing night has been a staple of the swing scene for close to 5 years now. Thad and Sue ran La Posada Resort for several years. That place was torn down so Thad moved it the Orange Tree Resort. Janet started to teach with Thad. After a while, Thad got burned out so I offered to take over the DJ-ing for "a month" or Thad could recharge. One month is all! One thing led to another and we ended up growing the night and then outgrowing the night! Now what?

Serendipity led us to Kim, the owner of Club Red, even before it was officially opened. We made a deal to get in on the ground floor because we hoped it was going to be a great place for people to meet and dance. We did take a huge risk because we made the night a 21 and over night. It's been done once in AZ history once but it didn't last very long. Not good! Plus, we really wanted to bring Lindy Hop into a "club" type atmosphere. We felt it was important.

We put an end date on everything before we even started the night. We said, "we'll just try it for one year and see what happens?" Shrugged our shoulders. Waited to see what would happen.

We closed our eyes and leaped!

Guess what?

The risk paid off!

It turned into the Club Red Swing you've come to know and love. (Aww.....) We sailed past our original 'end date' & didn't even blink. It was just too much fun.

On a more personal note, both Josh and I run small businesses. (Not the same small businesses mind you.) Running a small business is a lot of hard work. We've been working at it for a few years now and things are taking off. We're finding ourselves in a growth phase & we're having a hard time keeping up with both the that and the swing night. Running a swing night has always been a labor of love truth be told and it's just turned into a little bit more of a labor than love these days.

Janet has been teaching the swing night for 3 plus years now because she was actually teaching with Thad before Josh & I stepped in to give Thad a break. She's going to school right now and this next semester is her last...and hardest semester. She's ready to take a break as well. (Wish her luck, by the way.)

In the end....

there have been a few swing nights come and gone since we started and we feel you'll be fine with what's out there now. Yeah, it's not Club Red but it's something else and that something could be cool. It's all how you look at it.

Here are the details on the end date:

The last day at Club Red Swing will be the last Wed of May. That's May 28th. That's also the day the Jive Aces play. We kinda planned it that way. They're a super big band with an awesome amount high energy playing. Professionals through and through. You've never seen a band with this level of professionalism come through the Arizona swing scene. Guaranteed for real. Josh & I both loved them when we heard them play 8 years ago. (Yeah, they're old school.) They haven't been to AZ for about 6 years so we're all in for a great treat here. We're going out with a bang!

Also, since we triumphed for 2 years and pioneered a 21+ swing dance club here in AZ, we want to have a party to celebrate for each year.

One, the Jive Aces show.

Two, the Wed before the Jive Aces play, we're having a party! May 21st.

Write those two dates on your calendar right now. Do it!

That's right, baby!

We're going to have performances, routines, line dances, give away a bunch of prizes (we already do that but hey!), guest DJs, and other shenanigans. We'll have special DVD presentation for you that will kinda be a 'highlights of Club Red Swing' for the past 2 years sort of a thing. We'll see what happens there...

Basically, it's been a wild ride and the whole reason is because of you Chad the bad. Being on the email list, hearing all the great stuff, dancing every week, meeting other people, having a drink among friends....that's what it's all about.

We've had some really good times and we look forward to the last 4 Club Red Swings, each one gaining momentum as the month goes on until we go out with resounding bang!

BOOM!!!!

Our lives are forever changed because of the thing we started here and we're humbled by that. You had a part in that. A big, fat part. We did it because of you.

~Slam

PS Rest assured that Club Red is NOT kicking us out. We're not hiding anything here. They love us! We work hard. They can see it. It's totally the decision of Josh & myself. We didn't "lose" the club.

PPS You can always just drop a line and make a comment or two. Josh & I love to hear from you!

A Few Comments from Our Email List Readers

Hi Josh, Janet, and Chad

Thank you all so very much for the terrific work you have done to make Club Red successful and creating a communal celebration for what you are all so passionate about - swing dancing. Your dedication, devotion, and determination to have a mature, affordable outlet for swing dancers/lindy hoppers/balboa buffs is heroic and sets an all time precedent for any team to follow.

I wish all of you the very best in whatever direction you are traveling in, and it was perfect when you: taught, DJ'd, took photos, video taped, website updated. We shall see you around, somewhere on the dance floor perhaps, out there... so don't be a stranger. Mike and I can be counted on to make every Wednesday until the final one to celebrate the three of you and what you have created.

With greatest appreciation for everything you have done
the difference you make
and the impact you have
-Michelle Peacock

Well I will be so sad to lose you guys. It has been a wonderful, wonderful experience. Wed. Swing at Club Red has been my preferred place this past year. It would have been longer had I discovered it sooner. I know there are other places that are tons of fun, but I am going to miss the atmosphere. Good luck in your future projects. I'm sure I'll still see you out and about, doing what you do best. Thanks for having the best Swing Dance place in the valley! I'm definitely marking my calendar for the two big celebratory/farewell parties.

Thanks again!
-Brandi

Wow we will miss Club Red! So Sorry to hear it is closing but understand your personal situations. Thank you for all of your wonderful hard work that made it such a great place to dance and connect with fellow dancers! It will leave a great void in our week.

Bless the three of you for all you've done for the swing group over the years. It has been amazing. We wish you success and blessings in your businesses, marriage, schooling and all the future wonders ahead!
Blessings,
-Scott and Sandy Tremp

You have done a wonderful job in promoting and creating the sceneros at Club Red.

-Thx Dennis

My heart's broken...

I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND...it's got to be a huge amount of work...but selfishly swing dancing has been 'just what the doctor ordered'...not just for ME but for a LOT of people.

The Tempe venue has been fantastic..largely because of YOU GUYS, but also because...it's Tempe and gets that eclectic, diverse, quirky crowd from all over.

I wish you well and just want you to know how much I personally have appreciated your efforts.

I'll be at Club Red to enjoy the next few weeks..
Thank you SO MUCH!!!!! You guys are absolutely incredible people.

All the best,
-Steve

Thanks for the great times and much luck in the future.

-Linda

Thanks for the heads up guys! THAT REALLY STINKS, but I understand that....

Good luck guys and see you next month :)
<3 foxy christy

I'll definitely miss this dance night- BEST IN Phoenix!

I work with a bunch of lawyers, and I'm sure they will find a way to come after you for emotional distress for closing it, or that you have broken an oral contract that you are there "Every Wednesday Night" and now have decided to break that agreement. <sarcasm>

-Jason Miller

I only recently found out about Club Red Swing, attended three times, and now only have one month left to attend; this makes me sad.

I really enjoyed Wednesdays and desired to attend every week that I could. I couldn't make it this week, but I hope I will be able to catch at least the last two weeks it is still open.

Thank you for starting the swing night on Wednesdays, I am thankful for the ones that I have been able to attend. It was a lot of fun. I am sorry to see it go.

-Shaun Gill

NO!!!!!!!

Club Red has been such an awesome thing--so sad to see it end. I should be well enough to drive that far the last few weeks of Club Red, and I plan on coming, even though I won't be able to dance. Josh, Chad, and Janet--you'll all be missed SO MUCH!

-Suzanne Davis

PS I stayed with Club Red because of you, Josh, and Janet. You always tried to make it fun for us, and you are three very nice young people who seem to care about others. We will miss you so much. I wish you happiness and success in your new marriage and in all your endeavors, whether work, dance, music--whatever pathways your life leads you.

Be well.

Hey guys,

I'm not able to come to Club Red a lot because of a Wed. night commitment I have in my church choir but when I have come I've enjoyed it very much.

I know there is usually a great turn out and this is the only venue that some people attend.

Thanks for all you do!!!

-Debby Vondra

Dude, so bummed, but I completely respect and understand your guys decision. Definitely need to say thank you for all your hard work and creating the best swing night atmosphere I've been to. I know (from a lot of us), your efforts do not go unnoticed. Between the lessons, games, events, live bands, prizes, etc, etc, you guys have done a great job!

Peace,
-Stewart

What a depressing email. :( Well on the upside I'm glad to hear that your businesses are going well! I'll miss Club Red none of the other swing nights even slightly compare to it! Bummer...

-Megan Hill

How sad to have the Club Red Swing break up – but we can all understand that this was your “spare time activities” and you poured your heart into it to make it a success for all of us to enjoy. You guys are great!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know we will see you on the other dance floors but I will miss our Wednesday night’s at Club Red. Three cheers for your team efforts and best wishes to each of you in your future endeavors. -Happy Feet….

Dear DJ Slam and Josh,

Thank you for letting us know what's happening. I will definitely miss Club Red.
Thank you for dedicating years of your lives to fulfill a temporary commitment.
Thank you for bringing great bands in to play.
Thank you for your smiling and welcoming faces.
Thank you for the great instruction and super DJing.
I look forward to seeing you both out there dancing just for the enjoyment of it all!

-Patricia (The motorcycle rider)

How sad! Thank you for your commitment of two years
and good luck in your future ventures.

-Lisa

What a depressing email! I love going swing dancing at Club Red, it's been part of my weekly routine for most of the year. I understand though that it's a side business for you guys and thank you SO much all your hard work at keeping the venue going and growing these last two years. I'll definitely be out enjoying the last few weeks at Club Red.

Best of luck for the future and thank you so much for providing for us such a cool little place to swing dancing at every week.

Take care,
Jacqui

Hey guys,

All good things have to end...and this has been a very good thing. For almost four years now we've looked forward to Wednesday nights as a kind of reward for making it through half the week. If you made it to Wednesday, the reasoning went, then you can get through to the rest of the week. :-)

I understand you guys have other commitments and that you've been doing this because of your love for the scene. I'm sorry to see it end, but I'm glad I've been able to be a part of this. I wish you luck in whatever future endeavors you pursue, and hope this won't be the last we hear of your guys.
